Queen Ant Founding Colony Growth Expandable Modular

HexNest Foundry is our latest product introduction specifically designed to provide a comfortable home for new queens to establish their initial colony!

HexNest Foundry was designed to be 100% compatible with HexNest Formicariums.
The Foundry features a single connection where a new queen can be moved in to establish her colony. Once established, the same connection can be used to transfer the colony to a HexNest Formicarium.

The Foundry also includes a small hydration chamber that provides a healthy humidity gradient within the chamber.

A ventilation port is provided above the Queens Chamber.

A small foraging chamber is also included with an easily removable door that allows the keeper to add proteins, water, and sugars, as well as allow for easy cleanup.

The Foundry is also designed to allow a standard heating cable to be used to provide a heat gradient for your growing colony!

The HexNest Foundry was designed based on customer quests and feedback, and customers have been VERY excited by the product!

Honestly, most species will be quite safe and happy within a HexNest Formicarium.

The simplest answer here is: Anything larger than a Crematogaster Cerasi and smaller than a Myrmecia should be quite content. Personally I have a colony of Pogonomyrmex and Camponotus CA02 living happily in HexNest modules and they are loving life.

That being said, there are some extremely large species of ants such as Myrmecia, which would likely not be too comfortable. But, we are planning a future formicarium that will easily facilitate such large ant species.

Very tiny ants such as Crematogaster Cerasi find the 1.2mm ventilation holes to be easy escape routes. We are currently working with our laser cutting partners to resolve this and close these gaps so HexNext can be a happy home for the most tiny of species.

We will be producing a short video for this, but the process is simple.

Assuming you started from a test tube founding chamber, you would simply take a Test Tube Adapter, remove the end cotton from the test tube, place the Test Tube Adapter in its place carefully, then insert the test tube adapter into the Interface Connector. A 90 degree turn and its secure.

Cover the formicarium, but leave the test tube exposed to light and your colony will move. Be patient. Some ants move faster than other.

An outworld can easily be added to your formicarium by using the Tube Adapter. Take an appropriate length of 10mm od tubing, firmly insert into the Tube Adapter. Insert the Tube Adapter into an open Interface Connector then rotate 90 degrees. Insert the other end of the tube into your Outworld.

Absolutely! We specifically designed the HexNest modules to sit 4mm above the surface of a table. This provides adequate room for a standard heating cable to be run under the formicarium.

We suggest you run the cable underneath the formicarium along one side. This will provide a nice heating gradient for your colony to choose which temperature is best.
